2014 Players to Watch: Connor Mayes
With just a few spots left to fill in the 2013 class, it's never too early to look ahead to the class of 2014. One player that we'll be keeping a close eye on is Van Alstyne's Connor Mayes. The 6'5" 320 pound lineman is considered one of the top players in the state for the class of 2014 and is currently ranked #9 in HornedFrogBlitz.com's 2014 North Texas Top 35. Mayes is already making waves on the recruiting front and HornedFrogBlitz.com caught up with the big man to get the latest on his recruitment. Already holding offers from Colorado, Colorado State, Minnesota, UCONN and Texas State, Mayes is expected to haul in even more offers as the process plays out. So which schools are reaching out to him the most right now? "Mostly Baylor, Alabama is sending me a few things and Minnesota" said Mayes. "I would definitely like to hear from TCU and then Texas Tech and (Texas)A&M." With his junior year just now getting under way, what are some of the goals that the talented lineman has set for the 2012 season? "We definitely want to make it to state but just make it to the playoffs and from there try to make it to state" he said. Although his high school season is starting, there's no time to rest in the recruiting game and Mayes says he has a quite a few places he wants to see during the season. "I'll be taking visits all throughout the season" said Mayes. "I'm going to try to make it to Alabama, I'm definitely going to Baylor, we're going to Minnesota, we're going to try to make it to Texas Tech and that's about it right now." Even though Mayes doesn't have to have a decision made until signing day of 2014, he says he already has a timeframe in mind for when he would like to decide. "Probably towards the end of the school year." With a timeframe now in place for a decision, it will be interesting to see which programs come into play over the next few months.
