Hiawatha improved to 3-0 on the season with a 44-6 win over Royal Valley and Newell was a big part of the lopsided victory. It was a great win considering that same Royal Valley team scored 51 points, in one half, last year against the Red Hawks.
Newell said the hard work and higher expectations he and his team put forth over the summer had led to the best start for Hiawatha in over twenty years.
"My class, we started with seven on defense last year so we've been young lately and this year we were all here this summer and totally upped up our level and our expectations are so much higher," Newell said. "You can tell how hard we worked this summer. This is the first time Hiawatha is 3-0 in twenty years probably. We're beating big 7 teams, it's the Kansas league."
As for Newell, he was a force on both sides of the ball; particularly defense. Altogether Newell picked up 2 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, 8 tackles and a remarkable 4 forced fumbles. He also caught two passes including one touchdown, giving him three touchdown receptions on the year.
"I'm really proud of myself, against the option it's hard to make plays from the nine (spot)," Newell said. "I'm definitely glad for my performance. I'm glad I got that touchdown. That's my third one this year; I've already gotten more yards this. We're doing great things."
Newell and his Red Hawks teammates face their toughest battle of the year this Friday as they host Holton, one of the toughest teams in Kansas, in a battle of 3-0 teams.
"We play Holton which is the Kansas powerhouse, they run the exact same offense as Royal Valley so it's good to have them before Holton so we could kind of practice," he said. "We're real excited about playing Holton."
