Blanchard Getting New Interest From TCU

Blanchard will be at the TCU-Baylor game

West Orange-Stark safety Travon Blanchard talks about the recent interest he's received from TCU.

West Orange-Stark safety Travon Blanchard committed to Baylor way back and February and since that time he's remained solid with his commitment to the Bears.

That doesn't mean teams stopped showing interest however.

Now, interest seems to be setting in at an all-time for the nation's no. 36 rated safety prospect. A lot of that interest is coming from his original favorite; TCU, who offered Blanchard over the summer. Even after receiving the offer, Blanchard remained strong to his commitment to Baylor.

While he's not wavering from that commitment, things have gotten interesting with TCU once again entering the picture. Not only was TCU a favorite of his early in the process but now the coach responsible for recruiting him just happens to be the former head coach for his childhood football favorite; Randy Shannon.

Blanchard says he was relieved Coach Shannon was impressed with what he saw after becoming unaware with where he stood with the Horned Frogs.

"That's one of the guys I was looking forward to talking to and after Coach Tademy retired I didn't know what that situation was going to be like because he was a totally different coach and maybe he wasn't impressed with me as Coach Tademy was," Blanchard said. "Finally being able to talk to the head coach of my childhood football team, it was a good feeling knowing that he's impressed with what he saw."

Having the former coach of the Miami Hurricanes reach out to him gave Blanchard gratification that putting in hard work can lead to good results.

"It was a great feeling because it shows the hard work I've done this summer in the weight room and extra drills, it's not going unnoticed," he said. "Other people besides my family think I'm a good football player and that's a good compliment."

Speaking of being good at football, just one glance of Blanchard's early highlights of his senior season makes it easy to see why Blanchard is drawing interest from several new teams. UCLA, Texas Tech, TCU and Texas are schools that have shown significant interest in recent weeks.

TCU is now recruiting Blanchard as a safety or cornerback. He's played both positions for his team this year and shined at both spots. Obviously well enough to have Shannon tell him he could play either at the collegiate level.

"A lot of my highlights of me now are me in press coverage and Coach Shannon saw it and he said they were very impressed and it looks like I can play anywhere in the secondary," Blanchard said. "And depending on if I can put on size I can play outside linebacker or something."

"It's overwhelming because I thought after I committed I didn't know teams would come at me and know my name and who I was," he said. "To have all of these colleges pretty much coast to coast coming at me, it's really a big honor."

Blanchard will be in Waco this week to watch the Bears face off against TCU in a battle of two 4-1 teams. He doesn't know which team will win, but he fully expects a good game with both squads having advantages and disadvantages in different areas.

"It's going to be a good game because TCU has a good defense and good offense, even though they had the recent quarterback issue. And Baylor has a very explosive offense that can score at any time and they have an okay defense," he said. "It's going to be good to see those two go against each other, it gives me a chance to see if I could fit into both of their defenses."
