Commitment Recap: Week 0

Week 0 of the high school football season began last week and several TCU commits turned in big-time performances. Tony James (pictured above) put up video-game numbers in week 0.

Jaelan Austin - South Grand Prairie

Austin and South Grand Prairie played Dallas Skyline tough for most of the game but it wasn’t enough as Sklyine beat the Warriors 40-21. The Warriors were paced by Austin’s two touchdown receptions (38 and 20 yards) and only trailed by one score heading into the fourth quarter.

Joseph Broadnax - Dallas Bryan Adams

Bryan Adams faced little competition as they opened their season with a 41-7 rout over Dallas Roosevelt. Roosevelt managed just 161 total yards and 105 of those yards came on the ground.

Alec Dunham - Coldspring

Coldspring, under a new coaching staff, got off to an 0-1 start to the 2014 season with a 27-14 loss on the road at Huntsville. Dunham didn’t play any offensive snaps in the game. The Trojans fumbled twice in the game that led to Huntsville scores

Darrion Flowers - Arlington Sam Houston

Sam Houston used a 20-point third quarter and held on in the fourth to defeat Erick Fowler and Manor 27-26. Sam Houston was limited to just 48 yards through the air and all of that was tallied by Flowers.

Jeff Gladney - New Boston

New Boston hit a snag in their 2014 season opener against Atlanta; falling to the Jackrabbits by a score of 41-7. New Boston came into the game as the No. 7 team in the state in Class 3A.

Tre'vontae Hights - Yoakum

Hights and his Yoakum teammates started the 2014 season with a bang with a dominating 54-0 over Marion. Hights played both ways in the win; accounting for three scores and intercepting a pass.

Cordel Iwuagwu - Spring Westfield

Spring Westfield ran into a buzz-saw in their 2014 season opener losing to a very tough Alvin Manvel squad 35-10. Westfield managed very little on offense until late in the game; totaling just 345 total yards which included 241 rushing yards.

Tony James - Arlington Bowie

In what turned out to be one of the most exciting games in Week 0, James and his Bowie teammates outlasted a pesky Dallas Jesuit team 72-49. The Volunteers used a 31-point scoring surge in the second half. James was unstoppable on the night, accounting for 599 total yards and 7 touchdowns. Bowie totaled 872 yards of offense on the night.

Julius Lewis - Mansfield

Mansfield got off to a good start to the 2014 season on Friday with an impressive 29-16 win over Flower Mound Marcus. Lewis, a former running back, played in the secondary all night and helped the Tigers limit Marcus’ air attack to just 160 yards. Lewis also helped the scoring effort with a 95-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter.

Breylin Mitchell - Round Rock

Mitchell and his Round Rock teammates suffered a close loss on Friday; losing to 35-28 to Chad President and Temple. The Dragons struggled on defense as they allowed over 300 rushing yards and 150 yards through the air.

Niko Small - Arlington Bowie

Small and his Bowie teammates got off to a 1-0 start to the season but it wasn’t easy as they defeated Dallas Jesuit 72-49. Bowie actually trailed Jesuit at the half 42-41 before going on a 31-7 run in the second half. The Volunteers secondary was tested all night by UCF commit Bo Schneider, who threw for 405 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Jonathan Song - FW All Saints

All Saints lost their first game in two seasons as they fell to Houston St. Pius X; 35-32. Son nailed a 31-yard field goal in the loss.

Jarrison Stewart - Mesquite Horn

Stewart got the 2014 season off to a great start by hauling in 10 catches for 113 yards and a score as Horn held on to beat McKinney Boyd 21-15. Stewart’s touchdown catch came on a 17-yard reception in the first quarter to open Horn’s scoring.

J.F. Thomas - Dallas South Oak Cliff

South Oak Cliff played the reigning state champion and No.1 ranked Cedar Hill tough through three quarters, but late scores led to a 56-34 loss. Thomas kept the Bears in the game as much as he could, beating Tennessee commit Darrel Miller early on which eventually led to double-teams from Cedar Hill. Thomas finished with two touchdown receptions.

Semaj Thomas - FW Southwest

Thomas and his Southwest teammates opened the 2014 season with a tough loss to Boswell on the road; 44-21. The Raiders totaled 445 yards of offense, but the defense allowed 462 yards to the Pioneers. Thomas was a bright spot, collecting 10 tackles and 2 tackles for loss.

Freeze is no longer at Graham and is spending his senior season at Weatherford High School.

Jonathan Marshall - Shepherd

Marshall and his Shepherd teammates had zero problems in beating Cleveland last Friday as they shut out the 2013 playoff team 34-0.

Brennen Wooten - Marble Falls

Wooten and Marble Falls staged a big 28-point fourth-quarter rally but it wasn’t enough as they lost to Burnet in the 2014 season opener; 51-45. Marble Falls had totaled 761 yards of offense which Wooten accounted for over 500 of those yards.
