With a 4.0 GPA and test scores of 32 on the ACT and 1890 on the SAT, Argyle High School’s David Johnson could go to any college in the nation for his education. But Johnson also excels at football and has become the first verbal commitment for the TCU Horned Frogs in 2010.

With a 4.0 GPA and test scores of 32 on the ACT and 1890 on the SAT, Argyle High School’s David Johnson could go to any college in the nation for his education. But Johnson also excels at football and has become the first verbal commitment for the TCU Horned Frogs in 2010.

BigPurpleNation caught up with Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers to learn more about the 6’2, 250 pound defensive tackle.

“David takes his classroom habits to the field,” Rodgers said when discussing the dominance of the junior. “He studies tape and researches his opponent that he’s going to be playing against that week.”

Johnson used to play quarterback for Argyle, but he is now wreaking havoc from the defensive line. In 2007, he recorded 52 tackles and nine sacks as a sophomore, earning 8-3A Defensive MVP. He upped his played in 2008, securing 77 tackles, including 24 for a loss. He also saw his sack total increase to 12. He once again earned high honors, holding the title of defensive line MVP in the district.

Despite other teams double teaming # 15 and still allowing him to disrupt the offense, his coach thinks there is still room for improvement before he even makes it to TCU.

“David is a very, very explosive player,” Rodgers said. “We haven’t had anyone be able to stop him. He had a great improvement from his sophomore year to his junior year and if we can get that same improvement and determination for his senior year, he is going to be a major force to be reckoned with.”

If Johnson has the type of 2009 season he is capable of, there are sure to be plenty of programs in Texas and around the country who will try to lure David away from the Frogs. However, Rodgers says that will be nearly impossible.

“TCU is a top ten program and it would be amazing to me if anyone could come in here and do that,” he said.
